Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) – Correctional Healthcare

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and adaptable Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to provide comprehensive nursing care in a correctional healthcare environment. This position offers the opportunity to work across a variety of clinical settings, including clinic care, inpatient and outpatient services, medication administration, wound care, cell-side care, emergency services, and critical care.

The LVN will work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, correctional staff, and other healthcare professionals to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care to incarcerated individuals.

Required Qualifications

1. Graduation from an accredited Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) program
2. Current LVN license or permit to practice as a vocational nurse in the State of Texas
3. At least 1 year of experience in:
4. Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC)
5. Medical-Surgical (Med-Surg)
6. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) certification
7. Current IV Therapy certification or willingness to obtain IV Therapy certification
8. Ability to work effectively across multiple clinical areas and patient care settings

Key Responsibilities

1. Provide nursing services, treatments, diagnostic procedures, and preventive care appropriate for patient needs and safety
2. Interpret and carry out physicians’ orders
3. Administer prescribed medications and monitor patients for reactions or adverse effects
4. Assist physicians with sick-call evaluations when the physician is present
5. Observe and document patient signs and symptoms during sick call when a physician is not present
6. Apply surgical dressings and bandages and provide wound care
7. Provide emergency first aid and respond appropriately to urgent medical situations
8. Obtain, monitor, and accurately document patient vital signs
9. Assist with discharge planning and provide patients with appropriate instructions
10. Monitor and report reactions to treatments and medications
11. Report changes in patients’ physical, emotional, or behavioral conditions
12. Provide health education regarding medications, treatments, preventive care, and general healthcare needs
13. Consult with supervisors regarding complex or challenging patient cases
14. Assist with educating and supervising correctional staff regarding patient healthcare needs, when appropriate
15. Check, maintain, and order medical supplies as needed
16. Maintain accurate, complete, and timely medical records
17. Follow established clinical, safety, security, and correctional healthcare procedures
